When I start a character in MSCW, I treat early equipment as something that should support leveling rather than consume my entire budget. MSCW Mesos disappear quickly when potions, transportation, and equipment all compete for the same small pool of money. That makes naturally obtained gear much more attractive during the opening levels.
Managing MSCW Mesos is especially important before level 25. Early crafting may look like a shortcut to better equipment, but many recipes require refined materials and catalysts that are expensive relative to the item produced. If a monster can drop something useful for free, I would rather spend my time hunting than pay for a temporary crafted upgrade.
The Problem With Low-Level Crafting
Crafting has an important role in long-term progression, but early recipes are not always designed to be economical for a fresh character.
Smithing, Weaponcrafting, and Tailoring can consume materials that have significant value. A player may spend a considerable amount creating a weapon, only to replace it shortly afterward. This is especially painful when the character is still gaining levels quickly.
MeowDB's crafting efficiency information highlights this issue. Some early recipes can function more like meso sinks than profitable investments because their material costs exceed the practical value of the finished equipment.
That does not mean players should ignore professions. Instead, it makes sense to level them gradually while collecting materials rather than rushing to manufacture every piece of gear.
Look for High-Value Monster Drops
Monster drops can provide surprisingly strong early alternatives.
Green Mushrooms are one of the classic examples. At around level 15, they can drop the Pan Lid, giving certain classes an inexpensive shield option. Instead of buying or crafting an equivalent item, you can potentially receive it while earning experience.
Bubblings can also be worth targeting. Their Fish Spear is useful for Spearmen, and its attack speed can make early combat more comfortable. A weapon that improves the feel of grinding is valuable even if it is not something you will keep forever.
Around level 20, Blue Mushrooms can also become useful targets because they can drop early weapons such as the Wizard Staff. The exact value depends on your class and current equipment, but these drops demonstrate why monster farming can compete so well with early crafting.
Quest Rewards Cover More Than You Might Expect
A good early progression route should combine monster drops with quest rewards.

The advantage is simple: you can fill several equipment slots without making large purchases.
Work Gloves are particularly interesting because gloves can become relevant later when players begin working on physical attack scrolling. Earrings, shoes, and capes also give new characters more complete equipment without requiring an immediate crafting investment.
I would make these activities part of normal progression rather than treating them as chores. You are already leveling, so getting equipment at the same time makes the process more efficient.
Materials Are Future Value
One mistake new players can make is selling every monster drop because they need money immediately.
Pigs and Ribbon Pigs can provide Leather, Stiff Feathers, and Pig's Heads. Keeping around 25 Leather, 35 Stiff Feathers, and 21 Pig's Heads gives you a useful starting stockpile for later recipes.
Stumps are worth paying attention to as well. Tree Branches can become Processed Wood, and Leaves are useful for Woodcrafting. These drops may not seem exciting when you first collect them, but they can save you from having to search for the same materials later.
Octopus Legs are another material worth storing. Around 100 to 200 can be useful for early turn-ins and donations.
The goal is not to hoard every item forever. It is to recognize which materials are likely to have another purpose before turning them into quick cash.
Know When To Change Your Strategy
The monster-drop strategy works best because early characters replace equipment quickly. Once you are farther into progression and have stronger professions, crafting can become much more appealing.
At higher profession levels, you can access recipes that provide more meaningful stat improvements. If you have already collected the necessary materials, the economics can also look much better.
That is when I would start comparing crafted equipment with drops more seriously. Early on, however, spending heavily on production simply does not offer enough benefit for most characters.
Spend Carefully and Keep Leveling
A balanced approach works better than trying to force one system to handle everything. Use monster drops for practical weapons and shields, take advantage of quests for free equipment, and save useful materials while your profession develops.
If you eventually decide that obtaining additional currency would make progression more convenient, you may see players discuss options to buy MSCW Mesos rather than spending hours farming. Even then, knowing which equipment is actually worth obtaining will help prevent unnecessary spending.
